Since the kitchen redo of October 2008, I’ve had a bare space of wall in the kitchen.
In November when I found the new quilt shop in the town an hour away, I picked up this charm pack and a pattern I could use with it.
I love the fabrics and thought they’d be a great burst of color in the kitchen.
The store was expecting the coordinating bolts of fabric to arrive in December. ย However, when I made it back to the shop in January, the owner said they weren’t getting the fabric bolts in afterall. ย *sigh*
To the rescue, another quilt shop near that town announced in their February newsletter that they had this fabric line arriving!! ๐ ย So I bought the border & binding fabrics I wanted last week.
So far I have the center of the quilt done and just before I cut the borders I thought I’d see how it was going to fit!
ย (blush)
So if I continue as the pattern directs, the quilt will
cover up the light switch!
In the kitchen!!
And I live with 2 men!!!
ARGH!!!
That’s right, I have no brains!! :p
So….
Vote!
Here is the quilt center —
Still needs 4″ borders of this fabric:
Do I continue on and use the quilt some place else?
Do I not add any borders, use as it is, just the 5 x 5 blocks shown above?
Do I take off one row & one side to make it 4 blocks x 4 blocks and then add the borders?
Please vote early & often ๐ and no, there is no prize connected with this post!! ย ๐
Joyce,
I think it will look unfinished and wrong without the border, so I definitely wouldn’t leave it the way it is now.
What size are your blocks?
I don’t think I would make it 4 x 4 either because it’s not even that way.
Where does the light switch hit the quilt?
Can you make it 3 x 5 instead? At least that way it would look balanced. Then you could use the left-over blocks and make a 3 x 3 quilt to hang somewhere else.
I think you should take a row off and make it a 4×4 with the borders. Very pretty! Say, I have a bit of empty wall space, too… ๐
I would agree with Monica. And with those 9 extra blocks you could make a little mini table topper. ๐ I have wall space too! LOL
As someone with absolutely no expertise, I say put the border on. Whether you keep the center as is and use the quilt somewhere else or shorten the center and use it on the bare wall doesn’t really matter to me. Just give it a border. ๐
4 x 4 with borders.
Keep in mind my lack of quilting knowledge, but is it possible to make the border skinnier so it doesn’t overlap the light switch???
I don’t know if the fabric would work with something skinnier than 4″, or if that’s a bad idea, or ??? but that would be my first thought….
And, maybe another dumb question, but, is there no way the boys can be trained to reach behind the quilt to turn off the lights??
It’s beautiful though!! I love all those fabrics and colors together!
I would think it would look unfinished without a border. After that it would dpend on how you were planning on mounting the quilt on the wall. If you’re hanging it loosely, I would just slide my hand behind it to turn th elights on and off. If you’re going to mount it flush somehow, then I would definitely cut a hole in it. I agree it would just add to the quilts history someday then.
I thinkyou should take off a row and use the border. I really like the material!
now that i see it I vote for the border and take some squares off!
I’m assuming the light switch lands along the bottom edge or at a bottom corner.
Here’s what I would do:
Go ahead and finish the quilt as planned. Have you chosen a backing fabric yet? I would choose one that coordinates well with the top.
If the light switch lands along the bottom edge away from a corner, fold the bottom edge towards the back of the quilt, and discreetly pin in place.
If the light switch lands at a bottom corner, then fold the corner towards the front of the quilt, and discreetly pin in place. This would give it a nice little jaunty look – saying to that light switch “You’re not going to beat ME!”
This would leave the quilt “whole” as planned, and I wouldn’t regret changing the plan just because of a pesky little light switch.
And when I get the urge to rearrange my wall quilts, it will look perfect in another spot after being unpinned.
I have no idea but wanted to post a comment. It is an absolutely beautiful quilt!!!
I would finish it however you like it best, and then use wherever – it is absolutely beautiful, I don’t think you can go wrong!
I just realized that what I posted made absolutely NO sense. You CAN’T take a row off and still end up with a 4×4!!! What I was thinking was 3×3, but didn’t stop long enough to count. DUH! But whatever you do, I would definitely add the border.
