Today is Phil’s parents’ 56th wedding anniversary. Last week FIL asked MIL where she wanted to go for dinner today. She said, “I want to eat with K….”
🙂
Instead, they are taking us out to eat after church. A buffet brunch at a nice State Park near here.
I made them a table runner. I’ve had this in my head for awhile but other things took priority until it was crunch time! It is a whole cloth quilt. Here is the marked top. I think it took about 2 hours to mark it all. Silk-cotton blend that I hand-dyed in bronze.
I used cotton backing and wool batting. Quilted using Superior Threads silk thread for the first time. Bottom Line in the bobbin. Bliss!! After I quilted the straight rows, I did one of the large center blocks. They are only 8″ square. I squealed with glee to see this!
(washed out from flash) The straight line quilting and the free-motion work in one block took just over an hour. I had work to do but by golly, I think my eyes crossed doing this!!! I continued on, taking more breaks and just stopping to look off in the distance at times. The quilting took about 4 1/2 hours. I added binding and hand-stitched that to the back on Saturday morning. Then I so blithely tossed it in the washer. 🙂 I let it dry pinned to the living room carpet to block it to shape. It is about 17″ x 27″ after all the quilting.
I wrote on the back but then all the quilting really covered a lot of it. Somewhere in there I can make out the 10-10-10 I put on.
I had rust in the bobbin thinking that would make the back look cool. However, I used up the whole bobbin (Superior Threads Bottom Line handi-bobs) and wasn’t done yet!! So the outer edges & one corner triangle has brown thread. Next one will go better. 🙂
I’m in love with silk now! The fabric is delicious… hand-sewing down the binding with silk thread… divine!! 🙂
oh my goodness, this turned out gorgeous! I didn’t quite understand what you were talking about doing. NOw, I get it and it’s beautiful!
Wow! What a project. It is beautiful. You did a wonderful job, and I know they will love it! Have a wonderful day!
It’s beautiful!
Wait a minute—Hold the phone!–did you free motion all the leaves and acorns too—Plus the background?!? Oyi, no wonder you about went crosseyed!
Yeppers, Shelly! 🙂
STUNNING! I’m amazed at your ability.
Joyce that is AWESOME!
A masterpiece for sure!
that table runner is just amazing. I love the quilting and have always been drawn to oak leaves and acorns. Is it an original pattern?
The basic design of the oak leaves is from Joanie Poole. But I did the layout and reshaped some of the designs.
Wow! I have always wanted to do a wholecloth quilt . . . . only by hand . . . . . . yours is so inspiring! I love the oak leaves and the acorns. Everything blends to make a lovely table runner. It is a wonderful way to honor your husbands parents. Best wishes to all of you! 😀
[…] The acorn one like the above one got a first. This photo is from the fall – not at the fair. It belongs to my in-laws (for their anniversary on 10-10-10) but she let me enter it anyway. {more detail here} […]
I love it! I haven’t sewn with silk yet. You have inspired me. Where do you get your fabric?
